At Christmas, give a future: stories from the project “With the families”

The birth of a child is a journey into a new world, sometimes unknown, full of questions and uncertainties, a world to be discovered, where there are moments of great joy, but also of difficulty and despair. The birth, the first meeting, welcoming a new life into the couple, learning to recognize the crying of their child, breastfeeding, sleep regulation; these things often put mom and dad in a state of constant alert and vigilance in meeting the needs and providing the necessary care for their child.

Together with this new life, new parents are born. But who teaches us to be parents? Every parent carries their own history, their own roots, and scars from the past. Sometimes the fragilities are so complex that it is necessary to ask for support and assistance from competent people who know how to help families in difficulty, as happened in the case of Veronica and her baby Lucio.

The story of Veronica and little Lucio

This is the story of Veronica, a new mother eager to be the best mother to her son, Lucio, even though she was experiencing the fear and worry of being alone at home with him and not being able to respond to his needs, while her partner is at work. Veronica lost both her parents when she was just a child, and in this new journey towards parenthood she was experiencing a period of disorientation and loneliness.

Together with her partner they decided to ask for help from the Foligno Counseling Center and immediately accepted the proposal of the social worker Francesca to join "With the families", the Valter Baldaccini Foundation’s project dedicated to families in difficulty in the area. Thus begin the weekly meetings with the educator Annachiara.

The afternoons they spent together mixed outings in the area, new experiments and sharing moments of family life. Veronica slowly began to trust Annachiara, often finding herself experiencing the fatigue of caring for her child and the wonder of seeing her child grow at the same time, coming to terms with the reality that motherhood does not always correspond to what we imagined.

Day after day, in this new journey Veronica is discovering how to be a mother. She has the sense that she doesn’t always have to keep up, and she is enjoying motherhood and her child in the present moment, breathing a sigh of relief. Now Veronica is no longer alone, her journey with Annachiara has just begun and we will be by her side for a long time, until fears and fragilities have gone away.
